The small town of Laie on Oahu became our home for 2 busy years. The island’s natural treasures were akin to living in a tropical watercolor painting, pure visual magic. There was always a sight to behold, strikingly blue waters, paired with the lush green vegetation, brilliantly colored flowers, volcanic red soil, and sunsets like no other. And the wildlife, oh the wildlife is everywhere. While Hawaii does not have dramatic changing seasons, the wildlife steps in to provide the annual rhythm along with the waves. The humpback whales arrive in October-November to raise their young before migrating back in April-May. The Albatross come to nest in late October as well and nest through July. The North Shore comes alive with wave action in the winter.

The Eddie

The Eddie surfing competition was a ‘go’ the last year we were in Hawaii, and we couldn’t miss joining in the celebration. We jumped on the local bus and headed to the North Shore. Every inch of the beach was taken up when we arrived, but people were kindly making room for newcomers including us. The brave surfers were lined up on the far side of the wave breaks, and being on the beach we didn’t get to see them until they were flying down the waves. The photos I took don’t do the size of the waves justice, they were thunderous 30+ foot waves. I’m not going to write about the story behind the competition but highly suggest you look it up and read about, Eddie is a local legion for good reason.

Life goal, decorate a palm tree for Christmas.😁

Discovery #1 – Food

When we first moved to Laie, we barely knew the area. Slowly discovering its hidden gems and favorite local spots quickly became an enchanting adventure all its own. Our favorite dining included Ken’s Seafood (the best coconut shrimp in the world, and I mean it). The Kahuku food trucks were always an experience, 80 Chicken Sandwiches was our favorite, the sandwich is unlike any other with its secret sauce and piled high with fries. That said, the owner is what really makes that truck special. Seven Brothers burgers with the pineapple and onion rings on top, is out of this world. For breakfast, or anytime really, there is the Loco Moco, something you have to taste to believe it.

Discovery #2 – Exercise

Turtle Bay resort and golf course was close by and had wonderful trails we used to run off all that delicious food. In addition, there were some trails that ran up the nearby volcanic mountain that provided uphill challenge and wild flora and fauna.

Discovery #3 – Things to do

We visited the Polynesian Cultural Center multiple times, bringing family every time they visited. Each time was a wonderful experience, we highly suggest this venue over any other Luau on Oahu. Snorkeling in Hawaii never got old, seeing the honu was always the biggest treat of all, we’ll never forget swimming around them (keeping our distance) at the Kaneohe sandbar. Exploring the beaches became our after work activity for a few months, there was always another one to be discovered. There is no doubt, Hawaii has the most stunning beaches.
